How to Write and Publish Your First Book

Do you have a great idea for a book, but you don’t know how to produce or publish it?

Thanks to the popularity of the internet and e-book readers such as the Amazon Kindle, writing and publishing books is becoming easier than ever. It is also a fabulous opportunity to create additional streams of passive income for yourself, your business or your charitable organisation.

If you have never written a book before, you may be nervous about the process. As a web content writer, you specialize in writing articles that are typically about one page in length. On the other hand, an e-book can have 200 pages or more. Yes, when looked at from that point, writing an e-book seems like an overwhelming task. Instead, look at it as writing a series of articles. These articles will later be arranged in order and compiled into one e-book.

So, how can you write a book?

1 – Choose a Category

If you are a web content writer, you special in writing helpful and informative articles. This is your expertise, so you should stick with it. If you later want to expand to creative writing, do so. First, stick with what you know best. This will make writing an e-book easier.

As for the category, choose a topic that is interesting to you, such as working from home, parenting, or saving money. Or, choose an issue that is important to Americans, such as how to lessen the impact of global warming, how to make money from home, and so forth.

2 – Create a Title for Your E-Book

If writing a how-to book, this will be very easy. What does your e-book show readers how to do? If it is save money, a good title would be “How to Keep Money in Your Wallet.”

3 – Write Your Introduction

An introduction for an e-book is just like an article introduction. The only difference is the length. Summarize the purpose of your e-book, as well as your reasons for writing it. Instead of squeezing your introduction into one paragraph, use the entire page.

4 – Write Your E-Book

This will be the hard part for most. As previously stated, think of it as a collection of articles. Create an outline first. If you want to show people how to save money, start by outlining the ways one can save money. There is saving money on groceries, eating out, clothes, travel, utilities and so forth. Each of these can be a section or chapter.

Inside each chapter, break down into articles. For example, saving money at the grocery store can have one article that highlights why you should, how it can increase your savings, how you can use coupons, tips for finding coupons, and tips for getting full use out of them. Within minutes, you may have a collection of articles that can be transformed into a 10 page section or chapter.

5 – Write Your Conclusion

Your conclusion should summarize your e-Book and what readers just learned. Restate some of your most helpful and moneysaving tips.

6 – Edit Your e-Book

If you use Microsoft Word, the program will help you capture many grammar and spelling errors. It, however, isn’t 100% full proof. So, proofread and edit your book.

Now that you know how to compose an e-book, you may wonder how to make money from it. The good news is that you have many options. You can create a website and sell your e-book from there, use a third party marketplace, like LuLu.com, or convert your e-book to digital text and sell it as an Amazon Kindle book. To increase your earnings, do all three.

A website is easy and affordable to create. Lulu.com and other third party marketplaces are easy to use. As for the Amazon Kindle, you just need a free account. Upload your Microsoft Word document to the digital text platform and it will automatically convert the file into digital text. This makes it readable for Amazon Kindle users. Your book is then listed for sale at the Amazon Kindle Store.

Business owners: how to handle furious customers…

Good morning! Jerry K here.

This is a very practical topic to cover over the next few minutes.

Now be ready, because you could need this post today (ie, one of your customers could erupt like Mr Vesuvius by 12 noon)!

In the past, when I have been working with either my own client or with those of an employer, I would occasionally have to serve someone who is angry, frustrated or downright furious.

There could be a number of reasons why a customer or client would be in ‘the red zone’ from the very start of the conversation. We can talk about those reasons in another post.

For now, let’s call our angry client ‘Martin’.

Regardless of the reason behind Martin’s anger, there are some simple things that we have to cover with Martin within the first 5 minutes if we want to be able to calm him down and work towards solving the foundational issues.

Only THEN do we have a chance to fix the issues and turn Martin back into a happy, peaceful client or customer.

Here are the things that I have done in those situations to deal with an angry Martin:

  1. Let him talk without interrupting him, unless you cannot actually hear or understand him. In that case, politely interrupt and tell him that he needs to speak more slowly or whatever SO THAT YOU CAN HEAR HIM BETTER.

Example: “I’m sorry Martin, my name is Jerry, and I am trying to help you. Your phone line is a bit crackly. Could you please speak a bit slower? I want to be able to hear you so that I can help you with this issue.”

First, this is where I insert my name. I am telling him that I am a real person, not a nameless company employee. I try to build a one-on-one conversation so that Martin does not treat me as a company punching bag to take out his frustrations. I am here to help him.

This also states that it will HELP HIM if he slows down. It is a benefit to HIM as a customer, not just a benefit to me as the business owner or sales consultant. The emphasis is on HIM and his needs.

2. Next, if there is ANY part of the problem that is the responsibility of our company, I stop and apologize right away. Even if there are factors for which the customer is partly to blame, I take responsibility for our part without delay.

Example: “Martin, on behalf of the company, I apologize that the order arrived 2 days later than we promised. I will look into the reasons why that happened, but apologies for how that affected you and your family.”

That allows some of the anger to dissipate, mainly because customers often are expecting to have to fight their corner against uncaring business owners or service agents. If I take responsibility for our part of the problem, it helps them to feel that they are being listened to–which helps lessen the tension and aids in finding a solution to their primary issues.

3. Finally, I take personal responsibility and promise to take immediate action. Martin does not want to be blindly transferred to some other department and have to explain all of that mess again. He wants someone to take charge and make progress with his main issues.

Example: “Again, Martin, my name is Jerry. I am sorry for the stress this is caused you. I am going to do the following right now. I am going to speak to my business partner to find out what happened in this situation, I get the facts and details for you, and then I will ring you back in 30-45 minutes to fill you in on the situation. I want to get this sorted out for you. Is that OK with you?”

By promising my personal attention, immediate action and personal reply to him, Martin can begin to relax a bit because he knows that SOMEONE is working for him and with him to solve the problem. Even if the customer has some fault or responsibility in this instance, he will be more likely to hear it and accept it IF I HAVE TAKEN RESPONSILIBILTY FIRST.

Doesn’t that make sense?

Sometimes, it is all the client’s fault. I can’t help that. However, I can take ownership of the problem and work WITH him rather than work AGAINST him. That gives me a chance to actually BUILD the working relationship during this heated situation.

So, my friend, be encouraged. Read through this post a few times and take it all in.

Business owners: your customers HATE this….

Good morning! Jerry K here, with something that will help you TODAY in how you interact with your customers, clients and prospects.

​Over the past years, I have been working with customers and cli ents in a number of industries, including high-end retail sales as well as interacting over Skype and phone.

​In my experience, even though the industries and price points may vary, customers have a lot of things in common with each other. There are very clear things that customers LOVE….and some things that they clearly HATE.

I jotted down a quick list a few minutes ago of some items from the HATE list:

  • ​being lied to
  • being forced into more expensive options
  • feeling like they’re in a wrestling match with the agent/salesperson/business owner
  • being talked at rather than being talked to
  • the agent doesn’t care about them as a person, only as an impersonal prospect
  • not being listened to
  • monotone, dead-pan, scripted interaction
  • over-familiar or boisterous conversation

​(I have a personal story to go along with each of those, but you can see how real-life they are.)

​The one item on that list I want to point to today is: the agent doesn’t care about them as a person, only as an impersonal prospect.

​We know that most sales and business environments are a ‘numbers game’, meaning that you have to see XX number of customers to potentially get X number of sales which yields $XXXX amount of weekly income.

​That is a fact of doing business, at least on the sales management or accounting level.

However, if we let that perspective slip into our customer interactions, we are shooting ourselves in the foot in the first 5 minutes.

Here are some practical points that I have lived by on this topic. Pick out a few to help you and your team to build better relationships with your customers and prospects:

  • ask for your customer’s first name within the first ten seconds, and use their name in a natural manner throughout your conversation. It builds honest rapport quickly…..if you do this genuinely.
  • give them your first name as soon as they mention their own name, and add in a quick bit of appreciation: “Hi, my name is Jerry. I’m glad you stopped in/phoned today.” This appreciation sets the tone for the rest of the conversation. (I may repeat this later, in order to remind them of my name and to reinforce that appreciation: “Again, my name is Jerry. I’m really glad you stopped in/phoned today.”
  • if they mention having a family, ask a few simple questions about number of children and their ages. Add in a short bit of your own personal family information if it is relative to their situation.
  • I often use a counter-intuitive statement to ease the tension and get on the side of the customer: “You know, my manager wants me to tell you about the most expensive option that we have, of course (with a small laugh), but my job is to find out what you need (pause) and show you something that fits your budget. Is that OK with you?” This cuts through some of the adversarial wrestling that customers are on guard against, and a bit of a laugh never hurts while you build a working relationship with them.

7. You have trouble falling asleep

Even if you’re super tired and stressed out at work, you still find it hard to find peaceful sleep at night. You may even develop insomnia, thanks to the negative thoughts that pervade your mind day in and day out!

8. You feel depressed

When you start feeling depressed because you feel like you’re going to spend the rest of your life in the same job doing the same things over and over again, then you’re definitely burned out. Look for a way out – a side hustle is a good start!

Emotional Eating: How It Affects Your Emotions, Mind and Body

When you react to stress and pressure by indulging in comfort eating, it can affect you in different ways. You might notice some of the effects right away, while others could take a little longer to come to your attention. Here are the three ways that emotional eating affects the various parts of your life.

What Emotional Eating Does to You Emotionally

Turning to food for comfort affects your emotions. It’s kind of a catch-22 situation. You want to turn to the food because you’re feeling down. So you head to the pantry and grab a bag of chips or pick up a pack of cookies.

The emotions that you were feeling before you started eating begin to lighten as you eat. The act of eating works to suppress the feelings, since it activates the brain’s reward center.

Soon, you feel a lot better. You might feel happy and the emotions that you had before you started eating seem to have disappeared altogether. Sometimes, people aren’t aware that they’re emotional eating.

They only know they feel a strong pull to eat whenever they feel something they don’t like or don’t want to deal with. They eat, they feel better – so they turn to food again – not realizing that they’re setting themselves up for a dangerous habit.

Those chips and cookies you’re eating do a great job of masking the emotions while you’re in the act of consuming them. But this is only a temporary measure. The minute the food is gone, the feelings will all come rushing back.

These emotions always return, but they don’t come alone. You’ll still feel what you felt before you started eating but now, you have added emotions. The overeating of calories can cause you to feel guilty.

You’re feeling this emotion because when you eat like this, you feel like you’ve done something wrong. Emotional eating causes you to associate feeling better at first, but then immediately afterward, the guilt is ushered in.

You begin to berate yourself. You question how you could have eaten what you just did – maybe an entire carton of ice cream or multiple servings of pasta. You inwardly scold yourself for not having more willpower.

And you begin overanalyzing every fault you can find with your body, so that you can fortify the shame you’re feeling. While it might seem that going over the emotional eating in your mind and calling yourself out will help you do better or try harder, it doesn’t.

All it does is make you feel worse. When you turn to food, it’s because you’re not listening to your true emotions. You’re not tuning in to what’s really going on with yourself.

If you continue to engage in emotional eating and then battle guilt, you can start to feel a sense of disgust with yourself. This can turn into self-loathing and you’ll begin beating yourself up and saying to yourself that you’re fat or stupid or using all sorts of negative words.

What Emotional Eating Does to You Mentally

You might have a mental image of what an addiction looks like. It’s that guy who can’t say no to drugs. Or it’s the person who starts drinking first thing in the morning and never quits throughout the day.

Maybe you never considered that you could have an addiction. Especially not when it comes to food. You have to have food to live. It’s not like you can do without it. This kind of thinking is why so many people struggle to realize that emotional eating can be an addiction.

People who have this kind of addiction go through the same stages that someone with a drug or alcohol addiction do. When you turn to food because you want to feed your emotions, you’ll eat and you will feel better.

But that’s because of what’s going on inside your brain. The minute that you start eating, your brain gets to work releasing feel good chemicals. As you eat, you get a boost of endorphins.

These endorphins create the same effect in your brain that taking an opiate would. Endorphins are natural opiates, but the outcome is still the same. You feel so good and so relieved that you look forward to getting it again.

Emotional eating might not seem like it, but just like drugs, there can be a dark side. It can lead to addictive mental dependence. You might find yourself thinking about food more often than you should.

Whenever something happens that upsets you, you immediately get hit with a craving. You might feel upset and even a little edgy because you just have to get to some food.
You’ve become addicted to the natural opiate your brain delivers.

Because of that, you start to crave it just like you would drugs or alcohol. Just like an addict, when you can’t have the food you want or don’t get to turn to it, your emotions can get worse.

You might even have trouble handling your anger until you get the food you crave.
Emotional eating causes a dependence on getting that endorphin high because it’s an addictive cycle.

You’ll find that your automatic go-to response is always food first. You’ll feel this because you crave endorphins over cortisol. This is why emotional eating is often not something that you can simply “get over” or wish away.

Just like any other addiction, it has to be dealt with the right way so that you can break the control it has over your life.

What Emotional Eating Does to You Physically

Emotional eating can definitely affect your emotions, and this can not only affect you physically, but it can cause the caloric intake to take a toll on your body. When you’re emotionally eating, it’s to try to quell an emotion.

You can get tunnel vision, where all you see is that you feel bad and you want to feel better. You’re not even completely aware of how much you’re eating. So there can be a tendency to overeat.

This can be caused by a signal your body gets when you’re feeling emotional. Your brain reminds you that when you eat, you feel better. It releases cortisol and the next thing you know, all you can think about is junk food.

But there’s a price to pay for emotional eating. When you do this, you can end up gaining weight and developing serious health issues. You can feel stress from the emotion itself and again after you turn to food.

You feel stressed that you ate again or that you overate in one sitting. You can develop a slower metabolism that’s caused by this stress. This slower metabolism holds onto weight, so you tend to gain even more easily than you normally would.

In addition to the ease of gaining weight, you’ll find that your body is holding onto to more fat – and this fat can be stored in your abdominal area. This area can be harder to lose in, plus increase your risk of other health problems.

When you gain weight, you can end up developing diabetes. Emotional eating is a big cause of elevated glucose levels because of the types of food people choose when trying to mask their emotions.

These foods are often high in carbs, sugar, fats and other ingredients that are known to cause problems. The emotional eating is causing you to consume more calories than your body can handle.

You can also develop backaches from emotional eating. This can be directly linked to weight gain. When you gain weight, you can gain it in your stomach, thighs, arms, legs, chest and more.

The extra weight can pull on your back because it changes your center of gravity. You walk and move differently because of the weight gain and your muscles have to work with a heavier strain.

Joint pain is common with emotional eating. You’ll gain weight and that weight impacts your knees, ankles, hips and more. This is due to an increase of pressure on the joints. For every pound that you gain, you add additional pressure to your joints.

They simply weren’t made to handle excess weight, especially as time goes on. This is why people who are overweight can develop trouble walking. The emotional eating can also cause health problems like fatigue.

This is because it takes more energy for your body to work when it has to carry extra weight. It can also make your heart work harder and lead to issues such as sleep apnea.
